On Wednesday, October 18, Mrs. Lessig’s third grade classroom at Our Lady of Perpetual Help School (OLPH) in Bethlehem, PA will participate in a Mystery Hangout, a social game played with two different schools where students must guess each other’s location.
Using Google+, students will connect to each other’s classrooms in a video conference call and ask each other questions to determine the other’s location. Classes will prepare for the Geography lesson by writing clues and formulating specific questions. On its website, Google explains that it is “a mix of Battleships and 20 questions”.
Mrs. Frio, technology teacher at OLPH, is excited about the program for many reasons. “This activity is a great way for students to connect with their peers in other parts of the country, or even the world, and also to collaborate with their fellow classmates to find a solution- skills that are necessary in any aspect of life.”
Mr. Daniel Moser, Principal at OLPH, said, “At OLPH, our goal is excellence in education and offering a well-rounded curriculum. We want to engage students by using different avenues and teaching methods. The Mystery Hangout activity encourages real learning of the world and our country, its regions, directions, capitals, times zones, landforms, etc. It’s a way for students to become immersed in the lesson and it helps us to make learning fun.
