The Honorary First Defenders strives to perpetuate the memory of the First Defenders who defended our Capitol in 1861 and supports our local military reserve units.

Honorary First Defenders Commemorative Church Service

The Honorary First Defenders will be participating in their annual church service at Zion’s Reformed U.C.C. Church, 620 Hamilton Street, Allentown, PA.  The original First Defenders were called to protect our capital in April, 1861 and stopped at Zion’s church to pray before boarding the train to Harrisburg.  The church service is held on the date closest to Abraham Lincoln’s birthday who was President in 1861.  The 96th Pennsylvania Regiment color guard and Civil War reenactors will be there to portray the Civil War Regiment dressed in military garb of the average Civil War soldier.
