The City of Allentown celebrates the kick-off of Hispanic Heritage Month on Wednesday, September 26 from 5:00pm-8:00pm in City Hall.
Attendees can enjoy free food, singing and dance performances and live music. They can also view surrealist pieces of renowned artist Rigo Peralta. Peralta is a native of the Dominican Republic who emigrated to New York City in 1989 and now lives in Bethlehem.
The event is sponsored by the City of Allentown, Councilperson Dr. Cynthia Mota and Saradanga Latin Bistro.
Performances will feature local folkloric dance groups, mariachi band, and various music styles, including merengue and salsa.
Lehigh Carbon Community College’s Donley Center in downtown Allentown at 718 Hamilton Street will host a pair of Hispanic Heritage Month events.
The college’s Student Life Office and the LCCC Student Government Association are sponsoring Salsa Dance & Latin Culture with Tabitha Hitchye on Tuesday, September 25 at 6:00pm. Hitchye is the business director/instructor of Sentimiento Dance Company and studio director of Dance & Artistic Expressions Studio in Baltimore.
On Wednesday, October 10 at 1:00pm and Thursday, October 11 at 6:30pm, the college will present a lecture by Dr. Erika Sutherland, Muhlenberg College Associate Professor of Spanish and Director of the Grupo de Apoyo e Integración Hispanoamericano, a Hispanic immigrants support group. Dr. Sutherland’s lecture topic is “Immigration Today and Tomorrow: Education and Immigrant Youth.”
