Trio to Hike Appalachian Trail for Hillside School

On April 20, the students and faculty of The Hillside School located in Macungie, PA, will send teacher Sean Redmond and his friends, Devin Everett and Andrew Harman, off with gusto and good wishes to hike the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine, raising awareness for students with learning disabilities and scholarship funds so all can benefit from a Hillside education.  Students and staff have prepared an original send-off performance to celebrate their journey!

Students at The Hillside School have been exploring their dreams through journaling, collaborative art projects, and research of historical dreamers.  Sean Redmond, Hillside’s Art teacher, has always dreamed of thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail.  What better way to show students their dreams can be realized than by venturing on his own dream journey!  “Hiking the Appalachian Trail is my dream and I am raising money so that more students who struggle with learning disabilities can learn how to read and write without the fear and anxiety of being wrong.” –Sean Redmond

“The perseverance and grit our students practice every day to learn how to read, write, and solve math problems are the exact skills that they will use to realize their own dreams. All of us support Mr. Redmond’s dream journey and look forward to hearing about their adventures,” expresses Donna Henry, Head of School.

The Hillside School is an independent K-8 school for students who struggle to learn in traditional school settings.    Hillside serves students with language-based learning disabilities, such as dyslexia (reading), dysgraphia (writing) and dyscalculia (math), as well as speech and language deficits, various processing disorders, and attention challenges.

Sean, Devin and Andrew will remain in constant contact with members of The Hillside School community throughout their 5-month journey.  Supporters who wish to donate to The Hillside School Scholarship Fund in honor of the trio can go to http://hillsideschool.org/hiking-for-hillside/.
