Lehigh Carbon Community College Club Donates Funds to Lehigh County Office of Veteran’s Affairs

Money Will Help Support Local Veteran’s Organizations

(Allentown, PA)- LLCC’s Veteran’s Club as well as members of Phi Theta Kappa Club presented a donation of $3625.94 to Lehigh County Department of Veteran Affairs.

The funds were raised through a bake sale and BINGO night and aimed at helping combat homelessness among Lehigh Valley veterans.  Thomas Applebach, Director of the Office of Lehigh County Veteran Affairs was present to accept the donation.

“I want to thank LCCC for their continued commitment to the veteran community, whether it’s today’s contribution or the campuses’ efforts to further the education of those who served, their dedication has never wavered.  Local efforts like these are critical to address shortages of funding at the federal level,” said Applebach.

The money was used to finance 110 Walmart gift cards that were gifted to several organizations including, VA Allentown Outpatient Clinic, Hope for Veterans, and Catholic Charities.  Applebach stated that these cards will allow veterans to purchase both food as well as other basic necessities.

In 2017, the Lehigh Valley Homeless Veteran Task Force received a federal declaration stating that veteran homelessness had been effectively eliminated in both Lehigh and Northampton county.  The declaration is not a reflection of a complete elimination of the issue, but rather a recognition that a system has put in place to limit the duration that a veteran will experience homelessness.

Once a veteran who needs help is identified and assessed, the goal is to get that person in transitional housing within 30 days, and permanent housing within 60 days.
