HARRISBURG – Rep. Gary Day (R-Lehigh) is inviting high school students throughout the 187th Legislative District to participate in his “State Representative for a Day” essay contest.

The contest is open to students in grades 9-12. Participants are asked to identify a real-world issue they believe should be addressed by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and propose a practical solution.

“Young people bring valuable perspectives to the issues facing our communities and Commonwealth,” Day said. “This contest will give students an opportunity to think critically about public policy, develop a realistic solution and learn how ideas can become laws. I look forward to reading their proposals.”

A panel of judges, including Day, will select three winning essays. Each winner will be invited to Harrisburg to shadow Day for a day, tour the state Capitol, and learn more about the legislative process and the responsibilities of a state representative.

Essays must be submitted by Wednesday, Sept. 30, to hbortz@pahousegop.com. Submissions should include the student’s name, grade, school and contact information. Questions about the contest may be directed to Day’s district office at 610-965-9933.

The 187th Legislative District includes the boroughs of Alburtis and Macungie, as well as Heidelberg, Lower Macungie, Lynn, Washington and Weisenberg townships and portions of Upper Macungie Township.
