On April 1st the pledge was made by The Unidos Foundation to sponsor a minimum of 30 families of the Allentown School District with free Chromebooks. The response by the community of Allentown to support this initiative has been overwhelming. With the support of Trilu Media Studios, Yahaira Washington, and Yamelisa Taveras, we had our friends, family and community members came together to sponsor families by raising $3,000 so far, Preventive Measures Home Health Care donated $5,000, and a matching donation from Allentown Parent Network was pledged on April 14th to bring the donations to an incredible

$13,000 in just 13 days.

As the schools of Pennsylvania have been officially closed by Governor Tom Wolf for the remainder of the school year, nothing has made the disparity more apparent than the lack of access to technology for the 18,000 students of the Allentown School District in comparison to others throughout the Lehigh Valley.

Many school districts surrounding ASD have transitioned seamlessly to virtual learning. As we are now on week 5 of all schools being closed, the lack of resources available for the students of ASD has caused frustrations among many parents and education advocates. The Unidos Foundation and the community has proven that they will not allow for this deficit to get in the way of the education of our children. The sponsored families are identified by each school. We have already began distributing the refurbished devices since April 6th, and will continue our work until all devices sponsored have been given to families in need. While we trust that ASD is implementing a plan to address the educational needs of the students in the coming weeks, we are happy to have been able to begin this crucial work and make sure the students are ready for when the official online learning curriculum begins, and it’s all thanks to you!
