THE CITY OF ALLENTOWN’S 106TH ANNUAL ROMPER DAY

The City of Allentown’s 106th Annual Romper Day celebration will be held Monday, August 5 at 7:00 p.m. at J. Birney Crum Stadium.

Some 800 children registered at 20 Allentown playground sites this summer.  Many are expected to take part in Romper Day activities.

Romper Day activities include track events, dance exercises from musical selections dating back more than 50 years ago, the traditional Maypole dance/weave, the flag drill and a fitness competition with the Allentown Police Department.

The Playground Maypole Dance and Weave winners will be announced along with the track champions, and the Percy B. Ruhe award. This award is given to the most outstanding boy and girl on the playgrounds that emulate the qualities recognized by Percy B. Ruhe.

Romper Day is sponsored by the city, the Allentown School District, The Trexler Trust and the Allentown Rotary Club.

The first Romper Day was held on August 28, 1914.  Romper Day marks the traditional end of the city’s eight-week Summer Playground Program.

Rain date for the event is Tuesday, August 6.
