Sunday, October 1, 2023 – Health and Heritage Walk – Hugh Moore Park History Walk: River & Canal

Discover Hugh Moore Park’s fascinating past along the Lehigh River and Canal, highlighting how it helped to spur America’s Industrial Revolution.  Participants will learn about the park’s flora and fauna, the locktender’s house and Island Park.  Leader:  Jeff Mucklin

Sunday, October 15 2023 – Health and Heritage Walk – Washington Crossing during the Canal Era

Join us at Washington Crossing for a near 2 mile walk focusing on the history of the Washington Crossing area during the 19th century. The historical talk will focus on the canal history of Taylorsville.

Saturday, October 21, 2023 – Kids on the Canal: Halloween Trick or Treat

You can never collect too much candy or get enough wear out of those costumes!  Come visit the museum and take part in our educational trick or treat event.  Come in costume and trick or treat around the park!

Friday and Saturday, October 27 & 28, 2023 – Ghost Stories on the Canal

Come aboard our “ghost ship”, the Josiah White Boo, for a spooky 45-minute-long cruise along the Lehigh Canal.  Along the way, storyteller Judy England-McCarthy,  will regale you with tales of ghosts and supernatural happenings from canals and the industrial history in our region. Guests will be greeted with light refreshments that they can take on board.

Choose between two experiences on October 27 or 28.  The first ride at 4:30 is in daylight when riders can appreciate the scenery, while the second at 6:00 is in the dark for a more spooky atmosphere.

Appropriate for ages 7+ with parent discretion, you know your children

Sunday, November 5, 2023 – Health and Heritage Walk – Hugh Moore Park History Walk: Industry & Iron

Discover Hugh Moore Park’s fascinating past while exploring its industrial ruins.  Participants will learn about the Lucy Furnace and Glendon Iron Works, the Abbott Street industrial complex, and telegraph communications. Meet on the porch of the National Canal Museum.  Leader: Jeff Mucklin

Saturday, November 18, 2023 – Kids on the Canal: Home Made Play

November is a great time to learn about our heritage. Many of us have the canals to thank for our families moving to the area. In times gone by kids did not buy all of their toys from the store, they often made some. Come visit the canal and learn how to make your own clothes pin doll, hoop stick game and paper dolls.

Sunday, November 19, 2023 – Health and Heritage Walk – White Haven Tannery Walk

Join us as we explore the remnants of the Lehigh Tannery factory.  The walk will head south on the D&L Trail to the ruins of the Lehigh Tannery. The tannery was the largest in the United States in the 1860s and 70s.  At its peak, it produced 80,000 hides per year.  Distance is approximately 3 miles roundtrip along flat terrain.  If there’s time, we will head north of White Haven to see the remains of one of the Upper Grand Section locks.

Saturday, December 16, 2023 – Kids on the Canal: Winter Wonderland

It’s beginning to look a lot like winter! As the museum gets ready to close for the season, come on by one last time. Try your hand at some homemade holiday decorations. The birds looking a little peckish outside your windows? Make them a pine cone bird feeder to take home. They will be glad you did!
