TREXLERTOWN, Pa. – Matthew and Thomas Rotherham had been training for months for Tandemonium
Friday night all that hard work came to fruition.
The brothers from Great Britain swept the tandem events, winning the tandem sprint tournament and Tandemonium, the feature event, on Friday night at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center.
The duo wowed the crowd before opening ceremonies even occurred as the two set a new track record for the tandem flying one lap as the Rotherhams clocked a 17.05. That mark bested the previous record of 17.33, which was set back in 2007 by Andy Lakatosh and Ben Barczewski.
Yorick Bos and Jack Payne finished second in both the tandem sprints and Tandemonium.
The other feature events were the Hubert Schleh Memorial Unknown Distance events. Two events, one for the men and the other for the women, were held in honor of Schleh, a T-Town Hall of Famer. Schleh was an official who worked the bell and the unknown distance was his favorite event. Each race had a $200 purse for the winner.
Missy Erickson of Mertztown, Pennsylvania won the women’s version with Stephen Hall of Australia crossing the finish line first in the men’s edition.
Colleen Gulick won the women’s omnium for the second straight week as she earned 25 points by way of winning the 500 meter chariots and the women’s elimination race. Kim Zubris finished in second place with 15 points.
Hall used his unknown distance victory to help him earn first place in the men’s omnium. He totaled 21 points.
The Service Electric broadcast of Tandemonium can be seen on tape delay on Saturday at 4pm and Sunday at 4pm.
The 2016 World Series of Bicycling concludes next week with the Madison Cup/Air Products Finals. Following the racing, is a Fireworks Extravaganza presented by the Schmoyer Funeral Home, the Trexler Funeral Home, and the J.S. Burkholder Funeral Home. Also, it is the final PeeWee Pedalers Exhibition Night, and the T-town Elite riders are set to be honored for their performances at Junior Track National Championships last month.
