TREXLERTOWN, Pa. – The World Series of Bicycling returned to its normal ways on Friday night with the Keirin Cup and the Dog Day of Summer at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center.
Mandy Marquardt won the women’s Keirin national championship a week ago and followed it up with winning the women’s Keirin Cup on Friday night. Matt Rotherham of Great Britain won the men’s Keirin Cup. Rotherham is the first rider from Great Britain to win the Keirin Cup in its 30-year history.
Before the action got underway, there were quick schedule changes. The women’s Keirin heats were eliminated and a 2km scratch was inserted in the event #2 slot. For the men, the Keirin semi-finals was replaced by Keirin reps.
Rotherham earned another victory in the fan favorite Longest Lap.
Missy Erickson, fresh off earning a national championship in T-town a week ago, started the night off well with a victory in that 2km final.
Stephen Hall returned to T-town after racing in the midwest and won the men’s 25 lap points race as he accumulated 41 points. Tyler Nothstein finished in second with 32 points.
The women’s 12 lap tempo points race followed and was won by Colleen Gulick who amassed 12 points. Monica Volk finished second with 8 points.
Both the men and women endured Miss-N-Outs on Friday night. Gulick won the women’s version as Hall earned the victory in the men’s version.
Marquardt won the final event of the night for the ladies, the 3km final. The men had a 5 mile final for their finale and Hall was victorious in that event.
Gulick, who won three of the four women’s races in the program, won the women’s omnium while Hall won the men’s omnium.
It was also the second PeeWee Pedalers, presented by Teva Respiratory, Exhibition Night of the season. Graduates of the second session of classes displayed their newly acquired skills during one lap around the track before taking photos with their coach Missy Erickson.
The World Series of Bicycling continues next week with the Rodale Corporate Challenge. The annual event pits teams of local businesses against one another in an Italian Pursuit. There will be professional men’s and women’s racing as well. Gates open at 6 p.m. with racing beginning at 7:30 p.m.
