Make the Road Organizations Call for Senate to Reject Mass Deportation, Pass Clean Dream Act

Pennsylvania – As the Senate prepares to hold a series of votes on immigration proposals that would impact millions across the country, Rainy Leonor-Lake, a Dreamer with Make the Road Pennsylvania, issued the following statement on behalf of Make the Road organizations from five states, who collectively represent tens of thousands of immigrants throughout the Northeast and Nevada:

“We demand that Democratic Senators stand with us and reject the reckless proposal from the so-called ‘Common Sense Caucus’ (also known as Rounds/King). Senators want to say they’re helping me? Giving me freedom? When they’re proposing to deport and criminalize those I love? That is no kind of freedom I recognize.

“Trump is continuing to try to hold us hostage to criminalize and terrorize our families, loved ones, and neighbors. We say, without hesitation, no deal–what is on the table is far too high a price to pay. President Trump created this crisis and threw 800,000 families into limbo when he ended DACA. Since then, instead of finding a solution that would protect young immigrants and their families, he and his allies in Congress have advanced a series of white nationalist demands that run counter to our country’s bedrock principles and would cause untold pain in our communities.

“We reject the so-called ‘Common Sense Caucus’ proposal, just as we reject the white supremacist Grassley proposal, because it would result in deportations and persecution of the very people with whom we’re fighting to stay together – our families. We can’t accept that.

“The key point of agreement on both sides of the aisle is that we need to protect DACA recipients with a permanent solution: a path to citizenship. So let’s do that. Pass a clean Dream Act now!”
