(SCHNECKSVILLE, PA) December 15, 2017 – New perspectives on how to make our society more inclusive of children with autism are highlighted in the latest issue of Healing Magazine, KidsPeace’s award-winning twice-yearly publication. The Fall/Winter 2017 edition is now available at www.healingmagazine.org.
The issue’s lead article is by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ron Suskind, who chronicled his family’s experience in raising an autistic child in the best-selling book “Life, Animated,” which was the basis for an Academy Award-nominated documentary film. The book and film detail Suskind’s discovery that his son Owen’s interest in Disney animated movies provided a path for communicating with him – and that such “affinities” may hold the key to reaching other children on the autistic spectrum. In his Healing article, Suskind discusses his new project – developing an app that can help families and caregivers use an autistic individual’s own interests to create new channels of communication.
In addition, the magazine presents other efforts to reach beyond barriers to include children with autism in basic areas of life and childhood – from going to the playground to going to the movies to going to the airport and boarding a flight. And a music therapist discusses her experience with bridging the spectrum through the power of rhythm and song.
Other features in the latest issue of Healing include:
- Introductions to several innovative therapeutic approaches to treat children with behavioral health issues
- How pay-for-performance systems may be shortchanging mental and behavioral health providers
- An excerpt from a new book on creating inclusion and well-being among marginalized student populations, and a review of the book from an Indiana teacher coping with this issue.
