Residents urged to be cautious as summerlike heat continues

Allentown – As voters head to the polls today for the primary election, temperatures are expected to exceed 90 degrees. The Lehigh County Emergency Management Agency reminds residents to take steps to protect themselves in excessive heat.

Be Informed

  • Most heat disorders occur because the victim has been overexposed to heat or has over-exercised for their age and physical condition. Infants and young children, people aged 65 or older and those with chronic medical conditions are more likely to succumb to extreme heat.
  • Pay close attention to heat advisories or warnings (local television, radio and internet)
  • The two most common types of heat-related illnesses are heat exhaustion and heat stroke
  • Never leave your children or pets in a vehicle

Actions to Keep Cool

  • Stay indoors in air conditioning as much as possible
  • If you must be outside in the heat, limit activity to morning and evening hours, and try to rest often in the shade
  • Dress in light-colored and loose-fitting clothing, a hat, sunglasses and an SPF 15 or higher sunscreen
  • Check on family members, older adults and neighbors.
  • Cover windows with drapes and shades
  • Use window reflectors in your home to reflect heat back outside
  • If you don’t have air conditioning, visit a friend/neighbor, store or mall

Stay Hydrated

  • Drink plenty of water and do not wait until you are thirsty to drink fluids
  • Stay away from sugary, caffeinated and alcoholic drinks
