Allentown, Pennsylvania — On Thursday April 27, offices across the company filled with employees like any other day but one less stop was made on their morning commute. Rather than dropping the kids off at day care or grandma and grandpa’s house, staff took their children with them to the office. The fourth Thursday every April is Take Your Child to Work Day. The mission behind this holiday is so kids can see what their parents do to earn a living, better understand their opportunities, and learn what skills and education credentials are needed.
Initially coined as “Take Your Daughter to Work Day,” this holiday was an initiative to expose daughters of working women to their future possibilities and what it took to achieve them, as well as building their confidence. The day expanded to include boys in the early 2000’s to provide both girls and boys with career opportunities in an inclusive effort to nurture and inspire young children.
We may have our own stories from years past but we always hear new stories pop up annually. In the past, NPR, according to Gawker, confessed that a full minute of dead airtime was the accidental work of a “junior journalist’s” curious hands. This year most notably, President Biden was, as always, protected by a group of professionals adorned in all black, with shades, communication earpieces, and serious expressions but one thing looked a little different…they were kids! The President and the rest of the country enjoyed the humor behind the Secret Service bringing their kids to work to protect the president during a press conference.
In Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, One Financial Services welcomed children of various employees to their office for a few hours to learn about daily responsibilities of financial professionals. With seven kids in attendance ranging from two to 12, the activities of the day were diverse. From coloring pages with a bear, bull, stock charts, and other business emblems to a Bingo game where kids needed to count coins to find the corresponding number on their board to a tour of the office using the inter-office phone system, the kids had fun.
The day culminated in a pseudo client meeting led by Partner and Wealth Advisor Rob Pretopapa, CFP ® and father of four attendees, Lucia, Marlow, Theo, and Nico. The pretend client was One Financial Services Client Relationship Coordinator Support Dan Patton who recently retired as a school administrator with over 27 years of experience in education. With the parental and professional experience between Rob and Dan, the kids were able to better understand why people buy stocks, what it means to buy them, and how the stock market can fluctuate over time. They learned about how advisors work with their clients to understand their short- and long-term goals and how things may need to change depending on those goals.
Partner and Wealth Advisor Rob Pretopapa, CFP® shares “Having our children come to the office for a day is a great way to educate them in a hands-on way about our professions. We help them appreciate the work that goes along with being a financial advisor.”
With many smiles seen, the One Financial Services Take Your Child to Work Day was a success for 2023 and the employees and children look forward to more in 2024.
