February 28, 2022 – Allentown Public Works Director Craig Messinger is retiring after 33 years of service to the City of Allentown.
“Craig has shown remarkable leadership throughout his tenure with the City,” said Allentown Mayor Matt Tuerk. “He climbed his way through the ranks and put the department in a position to succeed. The Department of Public Works has become one of the strongest groups in our City, and Craig leaves it in a better place than he found it. He will be missed by the team here, but I’m happy that he will be able to spend time with his family.”
Messinger began his career with the City as a laborer in the Street Department and progressed through managerial roles such as Fleet Manager, Streets Superintendent, Deputy Director of Public Works and then becoming Director of Public Works.
He’s been essential in the implementation of the Downtown Allentown Traffic Mobility and Event Management Plan which was developed to accommodate the influx of visitors and patrons to the PPL Center area.
He’s also been responsible for budgeting, procurement, and contract administration regarding Building Maintenance, Engineering, Office of Compliance, Streets and Stormwater, Recycling and Solid Waste, Fleet Management, Tech Services, Traffic including traffic signal systems, pedestrian accommodations, and Traffic Management Center.
Messinger’s last day is Friday March 4.
Mark Shahda has been appointed the interim Director for Public Works while a search is conducted for a new director.
