On Christmas some members of Zion’s Liberty Bell United Church of Christ will get up extra early not to open presents under the tree but to serve breakfast at their church to those who are homeless and who stayed overnight in the city’s warming shelter on Martin Luther King Drive.
“For the homeless, this is just another Friday morning, ” explains the Rev. Bob Stevens, senior pastor of the church. “And it’s our turn to serve breakfast!” Union Baptist Church provides breakfast Mondays through Wednesdays; Zion’s provides breakfast Thursdays through Saturdays; and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church members provide breakfast on Sundays.
The doors open for coffee at 7 a.m. with breakfast served by 7:30 a.m. “The breakfast ministry of our churches gives people someplace to go when the Allentown shelter closes at 7:30 in the morning. A hot cup of coffee and a good breakfast go a long way to starting your day right, whether you’re going job hunting, meeting with your caseworker, or waiting for a drop-in shelter to open,” Pastor Stevens explained.
Zion’s breakfast ministry is a shared mission project in conjunction with St. John’s United Church of Christ, 36 S. Sixth Street, Allentown, and with support and volunteers from the First Presbyterian Church, Allentown.
