BETHLEHEM FOOD CO-OP TO HOST SCREENING OF DOCUMENTARY “QUEEN OF THE SUN” AT ICE HOUSE ON AUGUST 27
BETHLEHEM – August 13, 2015 – The Bethlehem Food Co-op will host a screening of the documentary “Queen of the Sun,” which deals with the plight of the world’s honeybees that are dying off, on August 27 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm at the Ice House on Sand Island, 56 River St. in Bethlehem.
Admission is $6 for adults, and $5 for students up to age 18, seniors over age 65, and Co-op members. This event is sponsored by the Sierra Club, but all proceeds benefit the Bethlehem Food Co-Op. Tickets are available in advance online – http://www.bethlehemfood.coop/queen_of_the_sun_movie_night. They will also be available at the door the evening of the screening, but attendees are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance since space is limited and we are expecting a capacity crowd.
Special guest Sharon Zondag, a fourth generation beekeeper and resident beekeeper at Northampton Community College, will give a short presentation on beekeeping. A representative from Bethlehem For Backyard Wildlife will speak about the importance of native pollinators and how to attract them.
“QUEEN OF THE SUN: What Are the Bees Telling Us?” is a profound, alternative look at the global bee crisis from the award-winning director of “THE REAL DIRT ON FARMER JOHN.” Taking us on a journey through the catastrophic disappearance of bees and the mysterious world of the beehive, this alarming and ultimately uplifting film weaves together a dramatic story of the heart-felt struggles of beekeepers, scientists and philosophers around the world. This spellbinding film explores the long-term causes that have led to one of our most urgent global food crises, illuminating the deep link between humans and bees.
The story unveils 10,000 years of beekeeping, highlighting how that historic and sacred relationship has been lost. Inspiring and entertaining, QUEEN OF THE SUN uncovers the problems and solutions in renewing a culture in balance with nature. It weaves together a dramatic story of the heart-felt struggles of beekeepers, scientists and philosophers around the world.
The Bethlehem Food Co-Op is owned by the community members it serves, and will support local producers and sustainable, humane, and natural food systems. Member-owners make a one-time $300 equity payment (or monthly installment payments) and will receive many perks, such as an equal voice in Co-op operations, opportunities for hands-on involvement, discount days, and access to unique educational opportunities. The Co-op currently has more than 220 member-owners. The faster the Co-op gains member-owners, the sooner the store can open to serve the community.
