Allentown residents and business owners Sam and Anne Crothers tried for years to have a child. They both wanted one child—a girl—but it never happened for them. When that didn’t work, they began an international adoption. Halfway through that process, the adoption failed. They grieved for years and slowly accepted the reality that they would remain childless. Until a miracle changed all that!
Unbeknownst to Sam, a few years after their adoption failed, Anne signed up on a website for kids who had aged out of foster care and other people who didn’t have their own families, Creating Extended Families (http://www.creatingextendedfamilies.com/). For years after she created her profile, nothing happened. But in April, Anne was matched with a woman named Christa, a daughter looking for a mother. Christa had lost a parent early and become estranged from the rest of her family very young. She had been looking for a family of her own for years.

The Crothers began spending time with Christa and they found themselves strangely happy. Having a daughter-figure felt so good! Things just seemed to fall into place for all of them. They decided to make it permanent. Upon contacting their attorney, Gerald Barr, they discovered it is legal in Pennsylvania to adopt an adult.
On January 5, 2018, the family will appear in Lehigh County Courthouse to do just that. Christa’s last name will be changed to Crothers and she will be issued a new birth certificate listing Sam and Anne as her parents.
On Saturday, October 21 at 3 PM at the Historic Benner Mansion, there is an almost-too-late-adult-baby-shower celebration planned to share this miracle with family, friends and their community.
