Allentown, PA – April 23, 2015

The Hamilton District Main Street Program Design Committee will be working on beautifying downtown and preparing four planter beds this Saturday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the intersection of 8th and Hamilton Streets.

Design is one of five committees of the Hamilton District Main Street Program which is a community-driven, comprehensive strategy used to revitalize downtown and neighborhood business districts. The Design team made up of community volunteers, works on getting the Main Street into top physical condition. Creating an inviting atmosphere can be done through window displays, parking areas, signs, sidewalks, street lights, and, of course, landscaping. Good design conveys a visual message about what Main Street is and what it has to offer.

Working in partnership with the City of Allentown, the Design Committee is leading a streetscape improvement project focused on improving the existing sidewalk flower and tree planter beds located along Hamilton Street at four intersections between 6th and 10th Streets.

The ultimate goal of this project is the development and maintenance of attractive, sustainable green space in the core of downtown Allentown.

Native plant species have been selected based on their ability to thrive in this environment with minimal required maintenance. Planting schemes will vary based on soil and shade conditions specific to each planter location.  In addition to the project’s aesthetic benefits, it will serve as an educational opportunity while highlighting the strong and growing community partnerships that are restoring vibrancy to the downtown area.

The project is being funded in part by a “Love Our City” a grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies and the City of Allentown.  Financial sponsoring organizations currently include Norris McLaughlin & Marcus, P.A., RETTEW Associates, Inc., ArcheWild, and Dan Schantz Farm and Greenhouses, LLC.
