George Kazakos life has focused around soccer first as a standout playing for Liberty High School being the Most Valuable Player and All League/All District in 1965 and 1966. George went on to achieve 1st Team All League/All Conference/All State in 3 of 3 years graduating early from East Stroudsburg University.
Kazakos showed his expertise in both baseball and soccer for the U.S. Army in 1968 and then served his country as a Vietnam Veteran.
Playing Pro Soccer for the Brooklyn Apollos came next followed by Semi-Pro stints with Hellenic International for 8 years and 6 seasons with the Pocono Snow.
George proved to be a champion on all levels both in coaching and playing. In 1983 in his first year as head coach at Freedom High School he guided the Patriots to a 23-0-2 mark winning the state championship after 16 overtimes. Freedom won 47 consecutive games in 1983 and 1984, going undefeated in league action 1983-1985. The Pates came close to another title in 1985 going 24-1 losing in the state semifinals. Five times Coach Kazakos took Freedom High to the state quarter finals and made state playoff appearances 18 of 23 years. Along the way Freedom won 11 East Penn League titles in 23 years with 6 District XI championships.
Kazakos developed 15 All-state players, 15 All-Americans (2 First Team National All-Americans and 2 National/Second Team All-Americans. George’s Boys soccer Record was 344-124-26. As the Freedom Girls Soccer Head Coach from 1989-2003 his record was 168-110-10.
In 1994 he was named the Pa Soccer AAA Coach of the Year. George was inducted into the Lehigh Valley Soccer Hall of Fame. George’s playing career had an upturn in 1996 winning a State Championship in 40 and over play.
Coach Kazakos attended USA and International Soccer Clinics for 28 years, ran clinics for youth and coaches for 10 years. George worked in College Camps and found himself in Sports Illustrated: Faces in the Crowd in 2000. He was a PIAA Referee for five years 2005-2010 and was inducted into the PA Soccer Coaches Hall of Fame in 2010.
George will be inducted into the Lehigh Valley Sports Hall of Fame on may 9, 2015 at the Northampton Memorial Community Center 1601 Laubach Ave. Northampton, PA 18067. Tickets may be purchased by sending a $30 check per ticket to LV Sports Hall of Fame 311 Mulberry St. Catasauqua, PA 18032.
