December 10, 2024 – The City of Allentown has been awarded a $384,000 Planning & Demonstration Award through the

U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program. This funding will support the Traffic Calming/Safety Demonstration Project and Feasibility Study, advancing efforts to make Allentown’s streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.

This grant will fund demonstration activities that align with and complement Allentown’s ongoing safety action plan. Key

initiatives include:

  • Pavement markings to narrow lanes and enhance roadway delineation via a “road diet.”
  • Installation of high-visibility crosswalks and updated signage to prioritize pedestrian safety.
  • Deployment of temporary and permanent speed humps near schools and parks to deter speeding.
  • Testing and evaluating other traffic-calming measures across strategic locations in the city.

These enhancements will target high-priority areas, ensuring improved safety for all road users and creating a more accessible and welcoming environment for residents and visitors.

“Improving our infrastructure to make communities across our Commonwealth safer is critical. This additional Safe Streets and Roads for All funding will help the City of Allentown install safety measures on its roads to protect pedestrians, drivers, and cyclists alike,” said U.S. Senator Bob Casey. “Thanks to the infrastructure law, we can continue delivering investments that keep Pennsylvanians safe.”

“A life lost on our roadways is a family devastated,” said Mayor Matt Tuerk. “This grant provides the resources for immediate, concrete actions to eliminate traffic fatalities in Allentown. These safety improvements will create a more livable, connected city where we can all thrive.”

About the Safe Streets and Roads for All Program

The Safe Streets and Roads for All program, funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation, supports local governments in planning and implementing innovative strategies to improve roadway safety and reduce traffic fatalities.

The City of Allentown launched its Safe Streets for All Action Plan this past spring funded by a separate $312,000 SS4A Action Plan Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The project consultant, Michael Baker International, Inc., is working to deliver a final report to Allentown City Council in February 2025. The City will then be eligible to apply for additional implementation and construction grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
