Since 1981, the iconic windmill at Louise W. Moore County Park has been a fixture within the park. The windmill has been damaged and unused for nearly the past decade. This August, Northampton County Parks & Recreation finalized the repair of the 16’ windmill with an entirely new head and tail. It now gracefully turns in the winds and has safety features to control its movement during high-wind events.
On the tail are two distinct dates referencing the history of the park. The first showcases the original name and use of the property, Slate Post Farm, established in 1818. The second showcases Louise W. Moore County Park, established in 1973 when the park was officially donated to the County.
The windmill restoration was completed by Hoosier Windmills, LLC of Churubusco, Indiana, a national leader in windmill manufacturing and repairs. The three-day restoration effort was assisted by Dickinson Crane Company and Werner & Sons Well Drilling. The total project was $64,500.
“Repairing the windmill has been a long-term goal for the improvements at Louise W. Moore County Park and is the start towards future improvements in the immediate area of the park,” says Bryan S. Cope, Superintendent of Parks & Recreation. The windmill restoration will now begin the process of adding new seating, landscaping, and restoring the pond, a resource that will enhance the park’s environmental and recreational opportunities once again.
Northampton County Parks & Recreation continues improvements at Louise W. Moore Park. The windmill project is in conjunction with the resurfacing of tennis courts, the addition of six pickleball courts, native pollinator areas, additional community gardens, tree plantings for the agroforestry program, and a new ADA-compliant and expanded restroom facility.
