Tracing the Earliest Moravian Activity in the Mid-Atlantic: A Guide

Publication is now available | Talk by the Author on April 9

Nazareth, PA—The Moravian Historical Society (MHS) is pleased to announce its newest publication, Tracing the Earliest Moravian Activity in the Mid-Atlantic: A Guide is now available.

The book, researched and written by Scott Gordon, is beautifully designed by Heather Reinert. The volume traces sites and structures from the Moravians’ earliest activity in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. During their first two decades in the mid-Atlantic region, Moravians preached the gospel, built churches, established missions and schools, and launched ships. In most cases, little remains at these locations to mark this extraordinary work. This guide describes these places and provides addresses, when possible, so that users can visit the sites. The 32-page volume is in full color with richly illustrated images and maps.

On Saturday, April 9 at 4 p.m., Scott Gordon will discuss the process of researching the book and the challenges of tracing the earliest Moravian sites, some of which no longer exist. The talk is free. Seating is limited, registration in advance is requested through our website: moravianhistory.org.

The book can be purchased from the Moravian Historical Society through its Online Store: moravianhistory.org/store or at the Museum Store located inside the Whitefield House. Located in Nazareth, Pennsylvania the Moravian Historical Society is open every day from 1–4 p.m.

Special thanks are due to our sponsors who provided funding for the publication: Moravian Village of Bethlehem and Moravian University.

Founded in 1857, the Moravian Historical Society is one of the oldest historical societies in Pennsylvania. MHS maintains the 1740–1743 Whitefield House and the 1740 Gray Cottage, the oldest surviving Moravian structure in North America. The Moravian Historical Society shares the fascinating stories of the Moravians and their contributions to worldwide culture through educational programs, guided tours, engaging museum exhibits, publications, and public activities.
