Milagros “Millie” Canales is the recipient of 2017 Allentown Human Relations Commission (HRC) award for overall excellence.
Canales is the president of the Old Fairgrounds Neighborhood Association. She was a driving community force behind improvements to Stevens Playground in the city. Canales also serves as Jordan Heights Community Liaison and is Rental Manager for Housing Association and Development Corporation (HADC) of Allentown.
Canales was one of nine persons honored by the HRC last night during a ceremony in City Council Chambers. They were presented plaques by Mayor Ed Pawlowski.
Pawlowski said, “Allentown is fortunate to have so many people who go the extra mile to make sure we have an inclusive community. I am very proud of the work done by these award winners, and I am happy that the Commission has chosen to honor them.”
The Commission has dedicated 2017 to reconnecting with the community as a newly reconstructed commission and new leadership. “We as commissioners felt it was most important to reinstate the awards as it is an acknowledgment of the members of the community who support the HRC ordinance and live by example,” said HRC Chair Jessica Ortiz. “We have an outstanding group of award winners, people who devote countless hours to making Allentown a better community.”
