On Wednesday, April 17th hundreds of mothers, teachers, workers, students, immigrants, elders and families converged on the Capitol steps to fortify courageous law makers leading the way to build a better future for PA. Every year groups unite to push for a Peoples PA Budget. This was one of the largest PA People’s Lobby Day yet, with over 200 people in attendance. Members made over 30 visits with legislator’s offices to talk about their priorities for this year’s budget.
Top priorities this year are:
-
Increasing Education Funding
-
No $ for fossil fuel subsidy or nuclear bailout
Ashley, Make the Road PA member:
“Our families need the minimum wage raised and we need it now. We don’t have to work every second of every day and still live in poverty. We deserve more. We deserve a minimum wage that does what it’s designed to do: boost the buying power and dignity of over one million PA workers.”
Josefina, CASA member:
“I came to advocate for better salaries because our families do not have to choose between food or rent. It is time we can give our children what they want and deserve without having to work two or more jobs. I hope that in 2020 we can harvest what we are sowing.”
Shawn, OnePA member:
“I am a mother, a grandmother, a great grandmother. Extractive corporations try to keep urban and rural communities apart… but we are all hurting. We need to build alliance and divest from fossil fuels. We need clean air and clean water. We don’t need to start tomorrow… we need to start today.”
Participatory democracy is the healing work communities need right now to right the wrongs and set course towards a future that provides an equitable and abundant PA future.
