Forging History & Community in Bethlehem – 2018
In an updated version from our 2016 video, field trips make the curriculum come alive for students. With the Foundation for the BASD’s support, the BASD is in the multi-year process of establishing curriculum-based field trips for each elementary grade (approximately 1,000 students per grade). The two-hour field trip titled, Forging History and Community in Bethlehem takes BASD 5th graders to the Steel Stacks Campus to reinforce class concepts related to our nation’s/city’s industrial heritage as well as instill a new generation’s pride in their city. The interaction among the students, teachers, and organizations so closely associated with the past and present of the city will promote a “common bond” among diverse populations of Bethlehem.
Eye on Elementary – Donegan Elementary
The Bethlehem Area School District has 16 elementary schools, all in different locations, but all giving the same first-class education. Every few weeks we focus on a new school and take a minute to show you what makes the school the special place that it is.
Today we take a look at Donegan Elementary with principal Sonia Vazquez.

NORTHAMPTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE INFORMATION
ArtsQuest is Accepting Nominations for the 2018 Awards
Across our region, artists of all styles, mediums and genres are doing amazing things to educate students and enrich the community through the arts. If you have a family member or co-worker who’s also a dynamic artist, or you happen to be neighbors with an arts teacher that students rave about, then the ArtsQuest Foundation invites you to nominate them for the Linny Awards, the multi-discipline arts awards designed to recognize the extraordinary contributions made by the region’s artists, educators, businesses, volunteers and philanthropists.
From now through May 14, nominations are being accepted, including the following categories:
Arts Educator of the Year
Philanthropy in the Arts Award
Student Artist Scholarship Award
Any individual, business or community group interested in nominating a person or business for the Linny Awards can do so at www.artsquestfoundation.org/linnyawards. The Linnys are open to individuals and businesses living or working in Lehigh, Northampton, upper Bucks and upper Montgomery counties in Pennsylvania, as well as Warren County in New Jersey.
Winners will be selected by the official Linny Awards jurying panel, with the winners announced in mid-July.
All 2018 Linny Award winners will be honored during the Linny Awards ceremony Nov. 8, 6 p.m., at Musikfest Café presented by Yuengling, located in the ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks, 101 Founders Way, Bethlehem.
Named after the late Marlene ‘Linny’ Fowler, a stained glass artist and community leader who supported artists and arts organizations throughout the Lehigh Valley for more than a quarter century, the Linny Awards are designed to recognize and celebrate the region’s flourishing arts community. Proceeds from the Linny Awards go to support the nonprofit ArtsQuest Foundation, which Fowler helped found in 2003. The nonprofit foundation is focused on supporting and strengthening the long-term sustainability of ArtsQuest, the nonprofit that presents Musikfest and more than 2,500 other programs, events and educational classes annually for our region. For complete information on the foundation and the Linny Awards, please visit www.artsquestfoundation.org.

Healthy Tip from Michelle Martucci, RD, LDN
Dietician for Bethlehem Area School District
Eat slowly and savor your food, and teach your children to do the same! It takes ~20 minutes for the stomach to tell the brain you’re full. So if you’re eating too fast, by the time the brain gets the message you’ve already overeaten!
