Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski is nominating former Lehigh County Executive Tom Muller to become the city’s next Managing Director.
According to Pawlowski, “We are very fortunate to have someone with Tom’s extensive government, leadership and managerial experience available to take over the duties of managing director.”
Muller was elected County Executive in 2013 and served until January. Prior to his election, Muller had served eight years as the county’s Director of Administration. He is currently serving as Acting Administrator to assist in the transition to the administration of new County Executive Phillips Armstrong.
“I want to thank Mayor Pawlowski for his confidence in me to help continue Allentown’s progress and hope the Council will share that confidence,” Muller said. “My commitment is to do all I can to ensure the citizens of Allentown experience unsurpassed services.”
The purpose of the managing director is to encourage collaboration, cooperation and coordination among city departments to ensure that the policy directives of the mayor and City Council are properly communicated and reflected in the day-to-day operations of the city.
The managing director works directly with the mayor to oversee the functioning of city services by the city’s numerous departments. Pawlowski said, “I know Tom as an outstanding executive and administrator. My administration has found him to be very accessible and willing to help solve issues between our two different areas of local government. I am extremely confident that he will be an exceptional managing director who will help improve our delivery of services throughout city government.”
Muller’s vast business management experience includes the position of President and Chief Operating Officer of Binney & Smith. Immediately prior to coming to Lehigh County, Muller had served as Senior Vice President at Victaulic and CEO of NVent LLC, a Joint Venture of Victaulic and NIBCO.
Muller’s civic and community involvement includes stints on a wide range of boards. He is currently Chairman of the Board for Easton Hospital and a member of the executive committee for the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.
Muller holds Bachelor of Science degrees from both the Journalism and Business schools at Syracuse University and an MBA in Marketing from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
The nomination of a managing director must be confirmed by City Council.
