WEEKLY NUTRITION and FITNESS TIPS
By: Michelle Martucci RD, LDN
Healthy tips:
Mint has many health benefits including: aiding in digestion and soothing stomachs in cases of indigestion or inflammation.
Oats may reduce asthma risk in children, may boost nutrition profile of gluten-free diets, increase appetite-control hormones, help lower cholesterol, help increase insulin sensitivity, and help improve immune systems.
Pecans are rich in magnesium, a mineral known for its anti-inflammatory benefits. Pecans are also a great source of phytochemical compounds. These antioxidants fight harmful free radicals that cause cancers, degenerative diseases, aging etc. and protect the body from infections.
Quinoa is naturally gluten-free and contains iron, B-vitamins, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, vitamin E and fiber. It is one of only a few plant foods that are considered a complete protein and comprised of all nine essential amino acids.
Strawberries help regulate blood pressure, boot immune system, promote eye health, lower LDL “bad” cholesterol, acts as an anti-inflammatory, and strengthens the immune system.
Tomatoes contain a wealth of nutrients and vitamins, including an impressive amount of vitamins A, C, and K, as well as significant amounts of vitamin B6, folate, and thiamin. Tomatoes can help improve heart health, promote healthy skin, strengthen bones, and improve immunity.
Vanilla contains numerous antioxidants, including vanillic acid and vanillin. Antioxidants protect your body from damage from harmful components, such as free radicals and toxins.
Watermelon contain phenolic compounds including flavonoids, carotenoids, and triterpenoids, which make this fruit a choice for anti-inflammatory and antioxidant health benefits.
Zucchini, especially golden skin varieties, are rich in flavonoid poly-phenolic antioxidants such ascarotenes, lutein and zea-xanthin. These compounds help scavenge harmful oxygen-derived free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) from the body that play a role in aging and various disease processes.
