Keeping your heart healthy with better oral care

Claiming around 610,000 lives each year, heart disease is the No. 1 killer of both men and women in the U.S.1 Did you know that research has found a link between this deadly disease and the health of your gums?

Having gum disease increases the risk of a first heart attack by 28%, according to a 2016 study by the Karolinska University Hospital in Sweden.2

“Although the findings indicate a strong link between gum disease and heart disease, it’s still unclear whether one actually causes the other,” says the American Heart Association. The two conditions have some of the same risk factors, including smoking, poor nutrition and diabetes. Researchers believe that inflammation caused by periodontal disease may be responsible for the connection.3

Prevention is the best medicine

Regular healthy habits can lower your risk of both gum disease and heart disease. And, if you already have one or both of these conditions, these strategies can help reduce their impact:

• Brush and floss regularly. To remove plaque-forming bacteria, brush for at least two minutes, twice a day, and don’t skip the floss.

• Choose a healthy diet, rich in essential nutrients (especially vitamins A and C). Reduce or eliminate sugar and starches.

• Avoid cigarettes and smokeless tobacco. These habits can destroy your gums and increase your chance of heart disease.

Congrats to FHS Senior Gabriella Greenhoward 2017 Recipient of the Superintendent’s Scholarship to Moravian College.

Gabriella was selected as this year’s 2017 recipient at a reception at FHS on Monday, March 27. Gabriella received a four-year full tuition scholarship to Moravian.

In 2017 the Greater Bethlehem Soccer League will be celebrating it’s 50th season of providing recreational/instructional soccer to children in the area. The league has a “Sunday Afternoon only” format for boys and girls ages 5-13 and all games/practices take place on Lehigh University’s Goodman Campus.

Stephanie Powell Watts will have at a reading/signing/launch party for her new novel, “No One Is Coming to Save Us” (a B&N Discover New Writers selection) at 7 PM on Tuesday April 4, at the Barnes & Noble in the Southmont Center out by 33 at 4445 Southmont Way, Easton, PA 18045. East Hills Middle School will host the fifth annual SCIENCE FUN NIGHT (SFN) on April 7th from 5:30 – 8:30 PM. SFN is a free, family-oriented event open to all members of the community. See live animals, make slime, learn to code with ozobots, explore forensics with the Bethlehem Police Department, sample ice cream made with the famous liquid nitrogen, and much more. 2017 Cops ‘n’ Kids Eleventh Annual Celebration of Reading … and the Arts and Sciences – April 22, 2017 – Students Needed to Perform

With the help of our entire community, the award-winning Cops ‘n’ Kids Children’s Literacy Program has reached a remarkable milestone, distributing more than 760,000 free books thus far. To celebrate this accomplishment, and the children of our community, we invite you to join us (rain or shine) for a day of food, fun, family, crafts, entertainment, laughter—and, of course, literacy. Baseball Umpires Needed

Bethlehem Umpires Association (BUA) is actively taking applications for baseball umpires! Whether you are an experienced umpire, or looking to break into the game as a rookie, we have the appropriate level for you. We offer a competitive level of play for all levels of experience and the opportunity to umpire throughout the greater Lehigh Valley area. Our organization officiates over 1500+ games for Little League, Travel Teams, Connie Mack, Youth Legion, and LVMSBL (Men’s League) from April until November. Take your passion for sports and turn it into a part time avocation that will enable you to give back to the community. We accept members starting at 16 and offer education, training and mentorships to improve your skills and obtain higher level games as you gain more experience. If you are an experienced umpire and you would like to try to get involved in a group we would love to hear from you. The BUA has over 1500 games that we need to cover each season and we are always looking for new and experienced officials to add to our officiating team.
