Congressman Dent wanted to pass along the notice below regarding the Library of Congress Summer Teacher Institute.
In 2017, the Library will offer five Institute weeks:
•Open Sessions (any subject area): June 19-June 23, June 26-June 30, and July 10-July 14
•Science, Technology, and Engineering Focus: July 17-July 21
•World War I Focus: July 31-August 4
The Library of Congress Summer Teacher Institute is appropriate for K-12 educators across many disciplines, including: Social Studies/History, English Language Arts, Science, Art, Music; and for any other educator who feels primary sources could be used with their curriculum. Librarians and Curriculum/Professional Development specialists are also encouraged to apply. If you have a question as to whether the Summer Teacher Institute would be appropriate for you, please send us an email to: teachinglcsummer@loc.gov. Application Deadline: March 17, 2017

BASD MiniTHON 3/25/17
BASD will be hosting it’s 5th MiniTHON at Liberty High School on Saturday March 25th, 2017 from 10AM-10PM. Join us for the fight against pediatric cancer! Last year we raised $125,867.37 and we need your help again.
Both Freedom and Liberty high school students have been working hard to fundraise and put this truly amazing dance-a-thon together, but it can’t be done without you! The community is encouraged to stop in and see what it is all about! 1pm-2pm is Carnival hour where there will be activities for the kids including games and face painting!

Healthy tip:
Garlic supplementation helps to prevent and reduce the severity of common illnesses like the flu and common cold. Garlic is low in calories and very rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin B6 and Manganese. It also contains trace amounts of various other nutrients. Garlic contains antioxidants that protect against cell damage and ageing. It may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Keeping your heart healthy with better oral care
Claiming around 610,000 lives each year, heart disease is the No. 1 killer of both men and women in the U.S.1 Did you know that research has found a link between this deadly disease and the health of your gums?
Having gum disease increases the risk of a first heart attack by 28%, according to a 2016 study by the Karolinska University Hospital in Sweden.2
“Although the findings indicate a strong link between gum disease and heart disease, it’s still unclear whether one actually causes the other,” says the American Heart Association. The two conditions have some of the same risk factors, including smoking, poor nutrition and diabetes. Researchers believe that inflammation caused by periodontal disease may be responsible for the connection.3
Prevention is the best medicine
Regular healthy habits can lower your risk of both gum disease and heart disease. And, if you already have one or both of these conditions, these strategies can help reduce their impact:
• Brush and floss regularly. To remove plaque-forming bacteria, brush for at least two minutes, twice a day, and don’t skip the floss.
• Choose a healthy diet, rich in essential nutrients (especially vitamins A and C). Reduce or eliminate sugar and starches.
• Avoid cigarettes and smokeless tobacco. These habits can destroy your gums and increase your chance of heart disease.

Do you sometimes imagine yourself fit and strong, striding comfortably down the road during an easy workout or a 5-K race? This gradual 12-week program will help you comfortably progress from the couch to walking, jogging or running at a pace that’s right for you. Weekly workshops include a group walk/run and presentations of various topics: buying proper walk/run shoes, training principals, injury prevention, motivation, nutrition and much more. Spring session begins Thursday,March 23rd at Hanover Township Community Center. We meet every Thursday from 6:00-7:15 March 23rd – June 8th. Sign up in February for $40. March 2 and March 4, 2017 – Come to Iowa and enjoy Northeast Middle School Theatre Company’s production of Music Man Jr.!
Our story is set in July 1912, when a traveling salesman, “Professor” Harold Hill, arrives in River City, Iowa. Intrigued by the challenge of swindling the famously stubborn natives of Iowa, Hill convinces the townspeople of River City to buy instruments and uniforms for their youngsters in order to save them from getting into trouble. As the story unfolds, chaos ensues as Hill’s credentials are questioned by Marian Paroo, Mayor Shinn, and others. As Hill begins to develop feelings for Marian, he faces a difficult decision about leaving town.
Remember the classic songs from this musical…Ya Got Trouble? Shipoopi? ‘Til There Was You? Wells Fargo Wagon? These and many more will be performed by our talented students!
NE’s performances, held in our auditorium, are Thursday, March 2, 2017 at 7 PM and Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 3 PM…admission is $5. Come out and enjoy the students who make us NORTHEAST PROUD!

With the help of our entire community, the award-winning Cops ‘n’ Kids Children’s Literacy Program has reached a remarkable milestone, distributing more than 760,000 free books thus far. To celebrate this accomplishment, and the children of our community, we invite you to join us (rain or shine) for a day of food, fun, family, crafts, entertainment, laughter—and, of course, literacy. Baseball Umpires Needed
Bethlehem Umpires Association (BUA) is actively taking applications for baseball umpires! Whether you are an experienced umpire, or looking to break into the game as a rookie, we have the appropriate level for you. We offer a competitive level of play for all levels of experience and the opportunity to umpire throughout the greater Lehigh Valley area. Our organization officiates over 1500+ games for Little League, Travel Teams, Connie Mack, Youth Legion, and LVMSBL (Men’s League) from April until November. Take your passion for sports and turn it into a part time avocation that will enable you to give back to the community. We accept members starting at 16 and offer education, training and mentorships to improve your skills and obtain higher level games as you gain more experience. If you are an experienced umpire and you would like to try to get involved in a group we would love to hear from you. The BUA has over 1500 games that we need to cover each season and we are always looking for new and experienced officials to add to our officiating team.
