Allentown, PA – Over the last few weeks the Allentown Police Department has responded to several incidents of pedestrians and bystanders being shot at random and sometimes injured using gel blaster toy guns.

These cases have been associated with a social media trend on TikTok known as the “Orbeez Challenge” that is being played throughout the United States.

As part of the trend, young users film themselves loading Orbeez balls, which are water-absorbent polymer beads, into gel blaster guns, and driving by and shooting people at random or as part of a game. The projectile beads can cause injuries, potentially severe, in sensitive areas of the body.

The Allentown Police Department is investigating cases reported in Allentown, and those found in connection with these incidents may face legal charges.

“This dangerous social media trend that is occurring throughout the nation is becoming an issue in the City, and it is something that we are taking very seriously,” said Police Chief Charles Roca. “I encourage parents to talk to their kids about what they see on social media and encourage participation in safe recreational opportunities for entertainment this summer.”

The City offers a wide-range of youth recreational programs and activities like the Allentown Summer Playground Program, Allentown Adventure Camp and the P.A.L. Youth Camp. Through the Department of Parks and Recreation, there are also several opportunities throughout the year for those interested in playing sports like basketball, football, volleyball, and soccer. Mack and Cedar Beach Pools are open daily this summer from 12 to 7pm. The spray parks at Bucky Boyle and Old Fairgrounds Playground are also open daily from 11 to 8pm.
