Volunteers from across the city are urged to sign-up now to participate in the Keep Allentown Beautiful Community Earth Day Cleanups. Groups are encouraged to clean up on Earth Day weekend, Saturday April 24, but the entire months of April and May are open for additional community cleanup dates.
“Earth Day is the perfect time to not only raise awareness about environmental stewardship, it is also an opportunity to bring our community together to take care of our blocks, our neighborhoods, and our city,” said Mayor Ray O’Connell in a joint statement with Ann Saurman, Manager, Bureau of Recycling & Solid Waste.
“After the year we just had, many folks are eager to get outside and make a difference in their neighborhood. Picking up litter is a simple, easy activity that most people can do, and the results are immediate,” said Shannon Reiter, President of Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful. “The responsibility of clean and beautiful neighborhoods belongs to us. This initiative provides tools and resources at no cost to our residents. If everyone picked up one bag of litter this spring, the results would be pretty powerful.”
The Bureau of Recycling and Solid Waste will supply brooms, dust pans, trash bags and litter tongs to volunteers to be used for the Community Earth Day Cleanups. The city will also provide trash and recycling collection for each cleanup group.
