Regional Finals will take place virtually for the first time ever in 2021

BETHLEHEM, PA – As part of a partnership with Arts in Education (AIE), Whitehall High School, Pocono Mountain East High School and Stroudsburg High School will participate as regional finalists in ArtsQuest’s Poetry Out Loud (POL) competition. They will participate virtually, for the first time ever in 2021, on Tues., Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. which will be available to watch on the ArtsQuest Facebook page and YouTube channel. Regional finalists will prepare 3 poems from a selection of over 800 famous poems, offered in the POL Anthology, to recite and be judged on for a chance to be state winner, which will be announced the second week of February.

State winners will go onto the state competition on March 8, and will also receive $200 and a chance to compete in the national championship in May. The state winner’s school will also receive a $500 stipend to purchase poetry books. State winner runner-ups will receive

$100 and their schools will receive $200.

Nearly 4,500 high schools across the country and 112 high school in Pa. participate in the annual POL national recitation contest each year. Students who had the opportunity to participate in ArtsQuest’s POL competition were from across our region, including Northampton, Lehigh, Carbon and Monroe counties.

This free program, offered to every high school student in Pa., encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance and competition. ArtsQuest is honored to participate, enabling students to study literature (including poetry), practice speaking, listening, language and reading skills, which are strongly supportive of all high school curriculums.

“Poetry Out Loud is an excellent way for teachers to work with their students in studying poetry. It gives them the opportunity to learn about poetry as well as grow an appreciation for it,” said ArtsQuest Education Coordinator Joanne Garcia. “Although this year’s competition will look a bit different, as the new AIE partner for our region, we are as thrilled to be hosting it for the first time!”
