The five winners of the City of Allentown’s “Catch a Young Person Doing Something Right” campaign will be honored at a reception on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at 5:00pm in the lobby of City Hall.

Launched in 2012, the “Catch a Young Person Doing Something Right” campaign is a way to recognize young people who contribute to the well-being of Allentown.

Mayor Ed Pawlowski said, “We are a diverse city that is served by many committed, caring and enthusiastic individuals.  It is my honor to recognize these young people and thank the folks who took the time to bring them to our attention.”

Each of the honorees will receive certificates from the mayor.

Awardees are encouraged to bring family members to share in the celebration and enjoy light food and refreshments.

Winners are honored in the following categories: Volunteerism – for assisting someone or improving a neighborhood or the community in general. Going Above and Beyond the Call of Duty – for doing more than following the rules, such as making a good decision even when peers chose otherwise. For showing leadership skills, critical thinking, problem solving, maturity or conflict resolution. Scholarship – Notable academic improvement and or academic excellence.

 

• Volunteerism– Stephan Quinones– Camelot for Children and Dream Come True volunteer. He and his family have cooked more than 100 meals for Allentown firefighters.
• Going Above & Beyond the Call of Duty – Alexandro Valderrama– Pursued an armed robbery suspect on foot and kept him in sight until he was apprehended by responding Allentown police officers.  Allen Lewis– Works with physically challenged students at South Mountain Middle School; member of 5 Star Heart Mentoring program at Moravian College; plays football for Little Huskies; trumpet player in South Mountain and Dieruff High School bands; plays violin for ESLV El Sistema of the Lehigh Valley.  Jahelys Adorno Zavala– President of Roberto Clemente Charter School Community Service Club; introduced school to the Buddy Bench project that raised more than $1,000; founding member of the RCECS dance team.
• Scholarship – Roy Ghosh– Parkland High School student who is a member of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, being recognized throughout the country for his research achievements; formed Science Olympiad team that reached national competition; created Science Buzz.com, the site has more than 6,000 registered users.
