 This coming month, Wildlands offers 14 exciting Community & Education Events:

  • 4 free “Get Out! For Wellness” hiking adventures on scenic and historical nature trails, including the Woodlands Apple Fest;
  • a free Mushroom/Fungi Foray;
  • an invitation to help plant trees with Wildlands and Little Lehigh Watershed Stewards;
  • 2 free Pre-K Pathfinder offerings, one on Halloween & come in costumes;
  • 2 free opportunities to explore Minsi Lake via canoes (all equipment provided and option to rent tandem canoes); and
  • 4 evening Spooky Nature Hikes – 2 free and 2 with nominal fees!

Wildlands Conservancy – Fall Fungi Guided Foray at Wayne Grube Park – 10:00AM – 12:00PM EDT at Wayne A. Grube Park, 1200 Willowbrook Rd., Northampton, PA 18067. Wildlands’ Mushroom Foray will search for and identify the fungi growing in the park area, in the spirit of helping people to learn about wild fungi. Wildlands Conservancy – Get Out! For Wellness: Nothstein Preserve – 1:00PM – 3:00PM EDT at 192 Henry’s Crossing Road, Paradise-Price Preserve’s parking lot, Cresco PA 18326. This preserve is important to Cranberry Creek, a cold-water fishery and Class A wild trout fishery. We’ll hike most of the 3.4 miles of trail, created and maintained by Paradise Township. Questions? Wildlands Conservancy – PreK Pathfinders: Dendrology @ Trexler Nature Preserve – 10:00AM – 11:00AM EDT at Trexler Nature Preserve – Environmental Education Center, 4935 Orchard Road, Schnecksville, PA 18078. PreK Pathfinders is part of a monthly series designed for children aged 3-5 and their grown-ups. Explore the changing leaves and learn how to identify several species of local trees. Wildlands Conservancy – Tree Planting on Mill Creek Road – 9:00AM – 12:00PM EDT at Mill Creek Rd-Little Lehigh Crossing, 2120 Mill Creek Rd., Macungie, PA 18062. Join Wildlands and the Little Lehigh Watershed Stewards on Oct. 12 for a day of conservation as we work together to plant 95 native trees and shrubs along the Little Lehigh Creek! These plantings beautify the area and help protect this vital waterway and the surrounding ecosystem. Questions? The shuffling, snorting, hooting sounds in the darkness aren’t anything to be afraid of. See nocturnal wildlife and erase the fear before pavilion lights are left behind and we enter the darkness in search of owls and other nocturnal creatures. Questions? Wildlands Conservancy – Hoot Hike! 8:00PM – 9:30PM EDT at Dorothy Rider Pool Wildlife Sanctuary, 3701 Orchid Place, Emmaus, PA 18049. Meet some owls native to the Lehigh River watershed and take a walk through the Dorothy Rider Pool Wildlife Sanctuary in hopes of hearing a response from the resident great horned and eastern screech owls. We’ll trek in the South Range, along the Trexler Border Trail. This is a loop-hike (about 3.6 miles) from the former Compost Center through Geiger’s covered bridge, then we’ll swoop down The Trexler Nature Trail to the Ford and back. Questions? Let’s look for the signs that secretive nocturnal creatures leave behind to let us know that they’re here. We’ll finish the hike by mixing up an edible treat.
