Bethlehem, PA – March 24, 2022: Celtic Cultural Alliance (CCA) announces an Irish Keening workshop on April 16, 2022, as part of its continuing mission to promote and preserve the Celtic culture through arts, music, dance and history programs.
Keening was a traditional Celtic practice of wailing in grief over a dead body at a funeral. In this full-day workshop, choreographer Annie Wilson will share the history of keening and then lead participants through a “keening” practice that she developed over the past 3 years, inspired by this ancient tradition, and incorporating improvisational dance and theater.
Keening offers an opportunity to acknowledge the power of the historical moment, and a chance to vocalize together— connecting us physically without touching.
From Philadelphia, PA, Annie Wilson is a choreographer, director, writer, musician, and performer. She is a 2017 Pew Fellow and an incubated artist at Headlong. Her work has been presented by Fringearts, Bryn Mawr College, JACK, thirdbird, and the Center for Performance Research. For more information on Annie, please visit her website at http://www.theanniewilson.com/. She has gotten a lot of her information on the history of keening from Dr. Mary McLaughlin: https://www.marymclaughlin.com/
This class will be held from 9:00 – 2:00 at the CCA office, 902 4th Avenue, Bethlehem. The cost is $40 or $35 for CCA members. Registration information can be found at www.celticfest.org

About the Celtic Cultural Alliance
On Columbus Day weekend in 1988, the first Celtic Classic was presented by a small group of individuals. The goal of this dedicated group was to create an event that symbolized the Celtic spirit and history and to provide the impetus for an organization that focused on promoting the Celtic culture. This group evolved into Celtic Cultural Alliance, a non-profit organization, to better communicate the overall goals of the organization.
The CCA has expanded with year-round programming to support the mission of promoting and preserving Celtic Culture through arts, music, literature, dance, and history programs. In keeping with the spirit of “Next Generation”, the CCA also offers scholarships to promising young students of the Celtic Arts. These yearly scholarships are offered to students of the arts, including Irish Step Dance, Highland Dance, Fiddle, and Bagpipes.
The Celtic Classic has blossomed into the largest Celtic festivals in North America. Annually, over 250,000 visitors come to Historic Bethlehem to join in this celebration of all things Celtic.
