More than 3,000 persons participated in the event last year, up from 1,700 in 2016.<\/p>\n
The Department of Parks and Recreation maintains 2,000+ acres of parkland in 43 parks, with 35 miles of trails.\u00a0 Volunteer projects assist with this monumental task to keep Allentown\u2019s parks looking beautiful.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Friends of the Allentown Parks are an extremely valuable organization,\u201d said Mayor Ray O\u2019Connell.\u00a0 \u201cThey have amassed an amazing number of volunteers that will be working in parks in every section of the city.\u00a0 I can\u2019t thank them enough.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMaintaining our parks to the highest level is our top priority,\u201d said Department of Parks & Recreation Director Lindsay L. Taylor.\u00a0 \u201cVolunteer cleanup projects allow the Parks staff to focus more time and energy on park renovations and improvements. We are most fortunate to have a dedicated group in Friends of the Allentown Parks who actively engage thousands of folks from the community to help us keep the city\u2019s park system in tip top shape.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cleanup projects are set for Sunday rain or shine at 33 locations:<\/strong><\/p>\n 5th<\/sup> St. Playground<\/strong> Participating community organizations include Faith Church, students from Muhlenberg and Cedar Crest colleges and Whitehall High School, the Allentown Library Neighborhood Association, Salisbury Township Environmental Advisory Council, The Literacy Council and ESL Classes.
