In the ensuing days, he penned a song, \u201cBethlehem Steel,\u201d that he\u2019s carried with him throughout his career.<\/p>\n<p>Now the frontman for Los Angeles-based touring band The LA Hustle, Goldstein last summer visited another former one-industry town &#8211; Bethlehem, Pa. &#8211; and got an entirely different take on what it means to be an \u2018old\u2019 steel town. Performing on opening night of Musikfest, the musician was inspired to once again pick up his pen and his guitar, breathing new life into the song he first wrote three decades ago. Percy Fawcett\u201d (PBS), spent hours interviewing the people and the organizations responsible for the transformation of the old steel mill into SteelStacks. Included in the documentary are interviews with former Bethlehem Mayors John Callahan and Don Cunningham; ArtsQuest President &amp; CEO Kassie Hilgert; Bethlehem Redevelopment Authority Executive Director Tony Hanna; Curtis \u201cHank\u201d Barnette, the last chairman of The Bethlehem Steel; former steelworkers and more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t believe any song I\u2019ve ever written has an end,\u201d Goldstein says. \u201cA beginning, yes; a middle of course. But songs are like towns, their endings are always new beginnings. I saw this documentary as an opportunity to not just investigate the town of Bethlehem and its incredible transformation, but also my own evolution as a songwriter. It\u2019s a very rare occasion that an artist is given an opportunity to publicly investigate his own journey.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>An Emmy Award winning filmmaker, Goldstein is also a successful recording and touring artist (under both his name and his popular stage persona, Jack Dempsey) and the author of the best-selling self-help book, \u201cThe Way of the Nerd: Practical Advice for Impractical People.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Goldstein grew up in Northbrook, Ill., which is the setting for several of the classic films of late director <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Hughes_(filmmaker)\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Hughes_(filmmaker)&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1520971521814000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEfS4_yvmJ3yU2LQtJoqJyjIT5mlA\">John Hughes<\/a>, who attended Northbrook&#8217;s Glenbrook North High School.\u00a0 He can be briefly seen in Hughes\u2019 films \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ferris_Bueller%27s_Day_Off\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ferris_Bueller%2527s_Day_Off&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1520971521814000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGKEhzYz3V3ygcH_7vIN8xO3fPkvA\">Ferris Bueller&#8217;s Day Off<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sixteen_Candles\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sixteen_Candles&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1520971521814000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHk8GKxhPlJhIw3Vrfz6aK-paUdlA\">Sixteen Candles<\/a>,\u201d as these films were shot during the years Goldstein attended <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glenbrook_North_High_School\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glenbrook_North_High_School&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1520971521814000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEbdA3PpnHWh8aVF-h_WGS3O0KU6g\">Glenbrook North High School<\/a>. Goldstein was then asked to perform with Hughes, who was also a musician and a songwriter, at several events, including a performance of\u00a0&#8220;Good Love&#8221; in front of a gymnasium filled with students. Years later, during the completion of the film \u201cCurley Sue,\u201d Hughes hired Goldstein to be one of his personal and creative\u00a0assistants, a\u00a0position that lasted until the end of production on the film \u201cHome Alone 2.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During his career, Goldstein has worked as a photojournalist for The New York New Times, writer for The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chicago_Tribune\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chicago_Tribune&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1520971521814000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFJG1icojiNGDVRy-YdfNkludVXlg\">Chicago Tribune<\/a> and as a television news commentator and field reporter for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fox_Broadcasting_Company\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fox_Broadcasting_Company&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1520971521814000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGr_tUSyJi43SazPwaEJVDSE79mCQ\">FOX News<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NBC\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NBC&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1520971521814000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFY1BdQw5OmaFlOYeHKF9y20rw7Qg\">NBC<\/a>. I felt that way in Bethlehem. Like every day there was a new reason to feel inspired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the coming months, Goldstein plans to take \u201cThe Song of Bethlehem\u201d film to select film festivals across the nation, coupling the screenings with performances where possible, to help share the story of how one former industrial town found success in the aftermath of its largest employer closing. This summer, Goldstein will also return to the Lehigh Valley as ArtsQuest\u2019s 2018 Artist in Residence, performing at the Levitt Pavilion Summer Concert Series and at Musikfest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mission is to get as many people as possible in as many economically depressed towns in America as possible to see \u2018The Song of Bethlehem,\u2019 whether that be through public screenings during my 2018 national tour or through events, theatrical releases or television and broadcast presentations,\u201d Goldstein says. \u201cThis film is a great inspiration to any community that hasn\u2019t been able to find the right way to move forward after a natural or economic disaster has struck.
