{"id":2199,"date":"2014-12-13T00:10:51","date_gmt":"2014-12-13T05:10:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thevalleyledger.com\/wordpress\/?p=2199"},"modified":"2014-12-13T00:10:51","modified_gmt":"2014-12-13T05:10:51","slug":"mayors-against-hunger-raises-money-for-food-banks-at-pa-society-fundraising-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevalleyledger.com\/?p=2199","title":{"rendered":"\u201cMAYORS AGAINST HUNGER\u201d RAISES MONEY FOR FOOD BANKS AT PA SOCIETY FUNDRAISING EVENT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><i>Over $250,000 raised for PA Food Banks<\/i><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Mayors from the three largest cities in Pennsylvania joined together in New York City last night to raise money for food banks in their cities.\u00a0 Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski, Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto and Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter hosted the Mayors Against Hunger fundraising event during PA Society weekend, a traditional series of social events attended by elected officials and business leaders from across the state.\u00a0 The cocktail reception was held at the Park Lane Hotel on Central Park South.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe decided instead of the usual receptions, we might as well raise some money for a good cause,\u201d said Mayor Pawlowski.\u00a0 \u201cThe response was overwhelming.\u00a0 We still got to mingle as usual, but at the same time raised money for our local food banks, who could always use more funding.\u00a0 It was very rewarding event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Nutter said, \u201cFood banks are an important avenue for many families and individuals struggling with hunger and poverty.\u00a0 This was a unique opportunity to demonstrate our sincere commitment to supporting vulnerable individuals by hosting a fundraising event at PA Society.\u00a0 I am moved by the generosity of so many and am proud that the money raised will help food banks across the Commonwealth, including Philabundance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each Mayor was charged with finding a local food bank in their city that was willing to participate.\u00a0 All proceeds from the fundraising event will go to these participating food banks.\u00a0 Second Harvest in Allentown, Philabundance in Philadelphia, and Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank are just some of the organizations who received significant donations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am proud of the support that Pittsburgh has shown for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank,\u201d said Pittsburgh Mayor William Peduto.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI am grateful to be able to take the opportunity to participate with many of Pennsylvania\u2019s leaders to help those most in need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several other Mayors participated as the host committee, including Wilkes-Barre Mayor Tom Leighton, and Chester Mayor John Linder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a great addition to PA society,\u201d said Mayor Linder of Chester.\u00a0 \u201cWe have all of these powerful people here, so we might as well bring our resources together and help our residents back home.\u00a0 Food banks are struggling to meet the increasing demand, and as leaders of our community, we need to help them in some way.\u00a0 This event will do just that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over $250,000 was raised during the two hour event, attended by over 200 people.<\/p>\n<p>Wilkes-Barre Mayor Tom Leighton echoed the sentiments.\u00a0 \u201cWhat a great idea, to make one of these cocktail receptions so worthwhile.\u00a0 We have so many residents across the state who utilize our local food banks.\u00a0 I\u2019m really proud that my fellow Mayors banded together to raise such a significant amount of money for such a worthwhile cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alan Jennings, Executive Director of Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley, which runs the Second Harvest Food Bank, served as the Master of Ceremonies for the event. \u201cToday\u2019s mayors face extraordinary challenges,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cIt speaks to these mayors\u2019 sense of compassion and humanity that they made this special effort to uplift their poorest citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: windowtext;
