ALLENTOWN, Pa. (Sept. 7, 2026) — A restoration of the historic Tack Barn in Lehigh Parkway is forthcoming thanks to a generous $750,000 grant to the Allentown Parknership from an Allentown family that has loved using the Parkway for generations.<\/p>\n

The restoration project will include structural stabilization, roof and masonry repairs, and adaptive reuse planning to ensure the Tack Barn serves as a vibrant resource for future generations. The site\u2019s proximity to Bogert\u2019s Bridge and the Little Lehigh Creek makes it a focal point for visitors exploring the Parkway\u2019s trails and natural beauty.<\/p>\n

The Tack Barn is part of the City of Allentown\u2019s collection of historic buildings. Originally conveyed to the City in 1931 by Edward\u00a0M. Young and Kate\u00a0R. Young, the property reflects nearly a century of community heritage and the area\u2019s equestrian history. The structure has been used for a variety of purposes over the years including the storage of “tack” (saddles, bridles, bits, stirrups, etc.) and gatherings for equestrians as well as parks department meetings and other social events.<\/p>\n

The restoration effort complements the City of Allentown\u2019s own $2.57\u00a0million rehabilitation of Bogert\u2019s Covered Bridge \u2014 the first major investment in the bridge since its construction in 1841 \u2014 funded through a combination of state, local and community grants and beginning in late 2025. Together, these parallel initiatives reinforce a broader vision to revitalize key historic landmarks along Little Lehigh Creek and enhance the Parkway\u2019s recreational opportunities and cultural heritage.<\/p>\n

The significant gift from an anonymous donor represents a major milestone for The Allentown Parknership, the official charitable partner of Allentown Parks and Recreation, and showcases the incredible opportunity for community members to make a lasting difference in Allentown\u2019s world-class park system.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis investment ignites new possibilities for gatherings, community events and other activities in the Parkway.\u201d said Ruffian Tittmann, executive director of the Parknership. “Revitalizing the Tack Barn preserves a unique piece of Allentown’s history while creating new opportunities for the public to learn, gather, and enjoy the Parkway.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Parknership anticipates a two-year project schedule that will include additional fundraising from individual, foundation, and corporate donors to fully fund the project, initially estimated at $950,000.
