Lurwick\u2019s\u00a0Induction was\u00a0Celebrated\u00a0at Special Olympics Pennsylvania\u2019s Summer Games<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

(June 16, 2026)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Special Olympics Pennsylvania<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(SOPA)\u00a0recently\u00a0inducted Lehigh County\u00a0athlete Samantha Lurwick\u00a0into\u00a0its\u00a0Hall of Fame\u00a0during its Summer Games.<\/p>\n

Lurwick started her Special Olympics career 20 years ago and throughout her experience, she has competed in bowling, basketball, softball, volleyball, golf,\u00a0track,\u00a0swimming\u00a0and gymnastics. She has shown her dedication to her craft\u00a0by training in sports year-round. Not only is Lurwick dedicated, but she is recognized for being the epitome of a great teammate. She is the first to congratulate her teammates and even her opposition\u00a0on\u00a0a game well played.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love being involved in\u00a0Special\u00a0Olympics,\u201d said\u00a0Lurwick.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI have made so many\u00a0friends\u00a0and I love the memories I have made with them.\u00a0\u00a0Being inducted into the Hall of Fame was absolutely incredible.\u00a0\u00a0It was the best night ever!\u00a0 I will remember it forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Off the\u00a0field,\u00a0Lurwick\u00a0has become an athlete leader\u00a0for\u00a0SOPA. The athlete leadership program empowers athletes to develop leadership skills and\u00a0use\u00a0their voices and abilities to assume meaningful leadership roles, influence change within the Special Olympics movement, and create inclusive communities around the world.\u00a0This summer,\u00a0Lurwick\u00a0will\u00a0be taking her leadership to the next level by\u00a0serving as an Athlete as Coach for SOPA\u2019s\u00a0Young Athletes program<\/a>\u00a0being offered at the Eastern Pennsylvania Down Syndrome Center this summer.\u00a0The Young Athletes program\u00a0facilitates\u00a0play-based activities designed to introduce children ages 2-7 with intellectual disabilities to the world of sports while developing fundamental motor skills, social skills, and confidence.<\/p>\n

Lurwick has taken her passion\u00a0for sports\u00a0and all that she has learned from\u00a0Special\u00a0Olympics to coaching.\u00a0She currently serves as one of the assistant coaches for the Bethlehem Catholic High School\u2019s Boys Basketball team.<\/p>\n

SOPA\u00a0established\u00a0the Hall of Fame in 1996 to honor the hard work, dedication and contributions of outstanding athletes and volunteers who have achieved incredible feats\u00a0on\u00a0the field of play and in their communities.\u00a0These individuals exemplify the\u00a0best\u00a0of SOPA. To be eligible for the Hall of Fame athletes must\u00a0participate\u00a0in Special Olympics for at least 10 years, display\u00a0dedication\u00a0and growth on and off the field, and\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0positive sportsmanship. One athlete and one volunteer\u00a0are inducted\u00a0into the Hall of Fame biennially.<\/p>\n

Joining\u00a0Lurwick\u00a0in the Hall of Fame as a volunteer is Scott Otterbein, a Special Olympics Coach from Montgomery County.\u00a0SOPA\u00a0Interim\u00a0Chief Executive Officer Nate\u00a0Garland announced both Lurwick and Otterbein\u2019s inductions\u00a0at the Opening Ceremony\u00a0at\u00a0SOPA\u2019s Summer Games, presented by Sheetz.<\/p>\n

\u201cAthletes like Samantha are why we do what we do,\u201d said Garland. \u201cNot only does Samantha give\u00a0it\u00a0her all on the playing\u00a0field,\u00a0but she shows\u00a0up\u00a0every day for her teammates, this\u00a0organization\u00a0and her community.\u00a0Our goal at Special Olympics Pennsylvania is to empower our athletes and Samantha\u00a0has not only embodied that but helps to empower others\u00a0each and every\u00a0day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Summer Games, held at Penn State University,\u00a0is the largest statewide competition\u00a0and brought\u00a0more than 2,000 athletes and coaches from across Pennsylvania to compete in five sports (aquatics, athletics, basketball, gymnastics, and tennis). Months of hard work and dedication to training were\u00a0rewarded as athletes from all corners of the state\u00a0went\u00a0for the gold during this\u00a0three-day\u00a0event.<\/p>\n
