Voters can rest assured that all valid ballots were counted and invalid ones rejected.

“This primary election was a testament to dedication and capability of our poll workers, election staff and the leadership of our new chief clerk, Michael Paston,” Siegel said. “His steady hand ensured that Lehigh County had a thorough, free and fair election and a smooth election day.”

The county’s efforts won plaudits from Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt, whose Department of State promotes and protects the integrity of the electoral process.

“Tuesday’s successful primary election in Lehigh County was a testament to the hard work of county elections officials and poll workers,” Schmidt said. “Because of them, Lehigh County held another safe and secure election, and voters were able to make their voices heard at the ballot box.”

The county contacted the department for advice and assistance when the error was discovered May 4, then spent the ensuing days making sure all affected voters were reached by letter and telephone and told what to do.

The county is grateful to local media outlets for helping to disseminate this information. We also appreciate the poll workers in Catasauqua who remained on the job when an explosive device was detonated in the vicinity of the polling site. Voting went uninterrupted despite the anxiety caused by this incident, which police concluded was not election-related.

“Lehigh County’s mail-in ballot return rate and turnout was in line with previous midterm primaries, which reflects both the speed and effectiveness of our response to the clerical error that briefly impacted mail ballots as well as our overall election process,” Siegel said.

Election results were available Wednesday evening – later than usual because the county took extra steps to ensure ballot integrity in light of the mail-in issue.

Here are some statistics as of Thursday:

Total number of votes cast: 51,046 (provisionals and overseas to be counted)

Turnout percentage: 20.2%

Percentage by party: Democrat, 30.5%; Republican, 19.2%.

Ballots mailed 25,789

Ballots returned: 20,119 (78% return rate; most recent comparable election, May 2022 had the same return percentage).

60.6% voted in person.

“Tuesday’s primary election was successful due to the hard work of many people,” said Paston, who underwent trial by fire as his first day on the job coincided with the discovery of the clerical error.

A veteran of county government roles in Bucks and Montgomery counties, Paston was unflappable as he led the effort to fix the problem. He credited his office staff and others for the broad-based, effective response.

“I have joined an elections office and county government that works together to make sure the citizens of Lehigh County can have their votes recorded through a process they can trust, and I encourage everyone to participate going forward,” Paston said.

“The elections office staff, both full-time staff and the many who assist on and around election day, are fabulous,” he added. “We would be unable to administer the ongoing wonder of democracy without our dedicated poll workers, organizations that host polling locations and other county staff who assist, as well as those at the state department and the county executive and his team.”

Said Siegel: “In the Keystone State, the birth place of our modern republic, democracy continues to shine and the process continues to prevail. Voters made their voice heard and Lehigh County ensured they were confident and assured of the process. The holding of elections is a sacred duty for Pennsylvania counties – we look forward to the November election.”

The Lehigh County Board of Elections will convene a hearing at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2026 at the Lehigh County Government Center, Public Hearing Room, 17 S. 7th Street, Allentown, to consider challenges to provisional ballots cast in the primary.

Provisional ballots may be challenged on the basis of voter registration status, a missing secrecy envelope, a missing signature, mail-in/absentee ballot status, and/or other defects.
