This holiday season, children in the Diakon Adoption and Foster Care program will receive gifts and travel bags from the staff at Service Electric, who donated more than 100 gifts based on ‘wish lists’ from 50 foster children.

This holiday project was managed by Tracy Moyer and Charlee Werner from the Service Electric marketing department, who spread the word among employees, then handled the logistics of collecting the gifts and delivering them to Diakon. This is just one of many charitable activities in which the Service Electric team is involved each year.

“It’s important to support the young people of the Greater Lehigh Valley,” said John M. Walson, President of Service Electric. “We see ourselves as more than just an Internet and cable provider – we are a family-owned company supporting and serving our community. If we have the opportunity to give a child a happy Christmas morning, we will certainly do what we can to ensure that happens. This is just one small way we can help to brighten the holidays for these kids.”

Diakon Adoption & Foster Care provides a variety of adoption and foster care services, and these Christmas gifts will be given to 50 foster children. Many young people in foster care must move on a regular basis, often using a trash bag to transport their belongings. To help eliminate that stigma and reassure these kids that they matter, Service Electric is also supplying a large duffel bag to each child.

“For years, with the help of generous donors, we have been able to provide wonderful holiday gifts to our youth in care, both those in traditional foster care as well as those in kinship care,” commented Diakon’s Director of Permanency Services, Joyce Riche. “The Topton office is so pleased to have Service Electric help by donating so many wonderful gifts, and by providing assistance in getting the word out about our continuing need for foster families. We could not do what we’re doing without the assistance of Service Electric!”

About Service Electric Cable TV and Communications

In 1947, John Walson ran a cable to connect his appliance store in Mahanoy City, PA to an antenna tower on top of a nearby mountain, eventually connecting homes in the community. As a result, the cable television industry was started in America. This model was copied throughout the country in areas where TV reception was difficult or impossible. Service Electric is also the birthplace of Home Box Office (HBO), launching the country’s first premium subscription service in the Wilkes-Barre market in 1972. Mr. Walson was guided by one fundamental principle; people wanted quality access to television and his duty was to provide it. Still family owned, Service Electric continues to build its positive reputation in the community and the cable industry, offering a variety of TV, Internet, telephone and telecommunication services. www.sectv.com

About Diakon Adoption and Foster Care

Diakon Adoption and Foster Care, a part of Diakon Child, Family and Community Ministries, provides foster care, adoption services and family preservation services to the children of eastern and central Pennsylvania, through offices in Topton, York and Mechanicsburg. Diakon’s services are designed to facilitate the best experience for both prospective parents and waiting children.
