(Nov. 2, 2021) \u2014 Muhlenberg College senior dancers share their experiences through movement, as the Muhlenberg Theatre &amp; Dance Department presents \u201cReset: New Dances,\u201d Nov. 18-20 in the college\u2019s Baker Theatre. Muhlenberg staged two outdoor concerts in the spring of 2021, but \u201cReset\u201d will be the first concert in the college\u2019s indoor performance spaces since before the pandemic.<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, sans-serif;\"><br \/>\nArtistic director\u00a0<b>Megan Flynn<\/b>\u00a0says the concert will mark a return to familiar spaces but will also highlight the dramatic transformations the artists have experienced in recent months. She views it as a fresh start for the dance program.<\/span><\/span>\u201cWe\u2019re coming back to campus,\u201d Flynn says. \u201cWe\u2019re hitting the reset button. We\u2019re going to ask, \u2018What\u2019s new? What\u2019s possible?\u2019 We don\u2019t need to follow the old standard ways of working. I\u2019m not looking to return. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s possible for artists to go back to the way things were.\u201dMost especially, she says, \u201cReset\u201d represents a new day in the dancers\u2019 ability to gather as a company, all together in the same studio \u2014 an important post-pandemic milestone.\u201cThe reset also includes the process of getting there,\u201d Flynn says. \u201cThere\u2019s a reset in our ability to show up for each other and to give feedback to each other and cheer each other on in the making and the questioning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This gathering has only been possible, Flynn says, because of the great care the choreographers and dancers have taken in the rehearsal process to be mindful of the ongoing pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Each of the works has a unique movement profile, with choreographers taking inspiration from modern, contemporary, jazz, and improvisation, as well as fusions of aesthetics from step dancing, ballroom, African, musical theater and ballet.<\/p>\n<p>Choreographer\u00a0<b>Allison Goldman<\/b>\u00a0was inspired to create her piece \u2014 which she describes as \u201ccontemporary with groove influences\u201d \u2014 after reading Jen Sincero\u2019s book \u201cYou Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life.\u201d Her work takes choreographic influence from her own journey towards self-acceptance, as well as from the experiences of her dancers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy piece is about entering into a new era of life and learning to love myself for the foreseeable future,\u201d Goldman says. \u201cIt\u2019s about changing the internal monologue to think and talk more positively about ourselves, and learning to appreciate and love every part of ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through her choreography,\u00a0<b>Arianna Tilley<\/b>\u00a0celebrates her identity as a black woman and the identities of her dancers in her modern fusion piece.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a self-driven renewal of who we are as black individuals and a reinvention of what it means to be Black and Proud and what it means to be a community,\u201d Tilley says. \u201cThis piece isn&#8217;t just for the audience, but for the dancers who have a lot to say and a lot to be proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her contemporary jazz-style work,\u00a0<b>Arianna Cacioppo<\/b>\u00a0tells the story of her personal growth as a woman. Her work embodies the reclaiming of how the female body is perceived.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy piece is exploring the female experience of having little agency over your body and how it is perceived,\u201d she says. \u201cMy entire cast is female-identifying and has been amazing about engaging with me on this journey exploring female sexuality and empowering themselves and each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other featured choreographers include\u00a0<b>Danielle Barrett, Emily Leandro, Kate McCowan, Sarah O\u2019Sullivan<\/b>, and\u00a0<b>Danica Schofer<\/b>. Junior\u00a0<b>Gianna Carnevalino<\/b>\u00a0serves as the associate artistic director.\u00a0<b>Paul E. Theisen Jr.<\/b>\u00a0designs lights, and\u00a0<b>Lex Gurst<\/b>\u00a0designs costumes.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to providing a fresh start for the dancers, Flynn says she hopes \u201cReset\u201d will offer audience members a chance to re-engage with live performance in a new way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis reset of returning to the theater perhaps will change the way that the audience is experiencing live art,\u201d Flynn says. \u201cWe all need a moment of clarity to see what we didn\u2019t see before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cReset: New Dances\u201d runs Nov. 18-20 in the Baker Theatre, Trexler Pavilion for Theatre &amp; Dance, Muhlenberg College, 2400 Chew St., Allentown.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Performances are Thursday and Friday, Nov. 18-19, at 8 p.m.; and Saturday, Nov. 20, at 2 and 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults; $8 for patrons 17 and under; and $8 for students, faculty and staff of all LVAIC colleges.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets and information are available at 484-664-3333 or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/muhlenberg.edu\/dance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">muhlenberg.edu\/dance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div><b>About the Muhlenberg College Theatre &amp; Dance Department<br \/>\n<\/b><i>Muhlenberg offers Bachelor of Arts degrees in theater and dance.
