Pen Argyl dentist Dr. Dave Turtzo will be inducted into the 7th Class of the Lehigh Valley Sports Hall of Fame on May 9, 2015 at the Northampton Memorial Community Center, 1601 Laubach Avenue, Northampton, PA 18067.
Dave Turtzo the first Pen Argyl High School 1,000 Point Scorer in Green Knight history smashed the previous school record held by Barry Young 800 points. Dr.Turtzo averaged 32 PPG his senior year. Turtzo had the second most points in the state, good enough to be named All State Associated Press and Honorable Mention by UPI.
Two school records for points in a game were set by Turtzo. He hit for 42 points against Southern Lehigh and eclipsed it versus Palisades putting up 55 pts. as he and his teammates put up a school record 99 points.
Turtzo scored 671 points for the Knights in his senior season. He went on to break the Lehigh-Northampton League Scoring Record of 400 set by Cal Vogel in 1955 and finished with 502 points in 15 league games.
Dave graduated sixth in a class of 130 students
Coach Jack Kraft awarded Turtzo with a basketball scholarship to Villanova University. Dave led the Wildcats Freshman team in scoring. Back then frosh weren’t allowed to play varsity sports. The Pen Argyl native played varsity basketball his sophomore year before he sustained a career ending leg injury.
The Wildcat took early admission to Temple School of Dentistry after his junior year at “Nova” The Doctor has been in practice in Pen Argyl for 43 years.
