ART GALLERY SAVES THOUSANDS OF FILMS FROM PERMANENT DAMAGE

SPECIAL SCREENING “DUSTY CANS” FOR DONORS WILL TAKE PLACE AT EMMAUS THEATRE

EMMAUS, PA  –  This Spring, The Alternative Gallery of Allentown launched their crowdfunding campaign, “Save the Film Prints!” to preserve thousands of historic films, before the one-of-a-kind recordings were destroyed by the Summer heat. Now, a selection of these films, as well as other cultural and educational films from the gallery’s pre-existing archive, are ready to be shown to the public for the first time in decades. The screening is aptly called “Dusty Cans”, named after the thousands of dirty tin film cans the gallery’s crew had to blow dust off of during the collection process. The event will take place at The Emmaus Theatre, on Wednesday, November 8th, at 7pm.

These 16mm prints include valuable documentation of the arts, civilization, and the humanities from all over the world, and will be shown over the course of two hours along with a discussion about the film materials.

An invitation to this screening was initially offered as a perk for backers of the indiegogo campaign who donated above a certain tier. Despite reaching their initial goal of $7,000 to purchase and retrieve the films, The Alternative Gallery is still seeking donations to account for proper maintenance, organization, and storage in their archive.

Tickets for “Dusty Cans” are still available to the public in exchange for a $25 donation to the campaign.

More information about the discovery of these film prints, as well as the specifics of The Alternative Gallery’s preservation efforts, can be found directly on the indiegogo campaign page.

Since they began this initiative, the gallery has received tons of support; with friends, artists, filmmakers, archivists and more spreading the word of this mission throughout the community. Additionally, the movement has received attention from notable sources such as Lehigh Valley Live, and funding from a variety of organizations, namely

Past & Future Generations who donated a thousand dollars in just the first day of the campaign! The Alternative Gallery is well known for their actions towards media archiving, receiving a constant flow of unique film donations, and hosting the occasional screening of films right at the gallery.

“We feel it’s important to showcase the films the original way they were meant to be seen, which is an educational element in and of itself” says Brandon Wunder, Alternative Gallery Director.
