Allentown, PA – February 8, 2021 – Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lehigh Valley (BBBSLV), an area nonprofit dedicated to igniting the power and promise of youth through one-to-one mentoring, is transitioning their signature event and largest annual fundraiser, Bowl for Kids’ Sake, to the virtual space in 2021. Because of restrictions around COVID-19, they are asking supporters to trade in their bowling shoes for thinking caps and participate in a new event series, Trivia Bowl for Kids’ Sake.
For over 30 years, hundreds of bowlers and corporate sponsors have come together to support local children in need of a dedicated adult mentor. The event raises upwards of $100,000 annually and is an essential funding source in the agency’s budget. This year, the fundraising goal for Trivia Bowl for Kids’ Sake is $125,000.
The decision to pivot from an in-person to virtual event was not made lightly, however BBBSLV’s Board Chair and head
of the Trivia Bowl for Kids’ Sake event committee, Joshua Hinkle, is looking forward to the potential of reaching new audiences with the agency’s mission.
“Bowl for Kids’ Sake is a longstanding tradition for many people and companies throughout the Valley,” said Hinkle. “We hope our usual supporters will rally behind this reimagined event, but we also hope to engage new people looking for a social activity during COVID. A virtual event means there are no geographic limitations, so families, friends and co-workers can participate, regardless of where they live or work.”
For BBBSLV’s CEO, Susan Bartels, the success of Trivia Bowl for Kids’ Sake is critical to keeping the children they serve (Littles) connected to the stable support of their mentors (Bigs).
“Embracing change is important for any nonprofit to survive through the pandemic,” said Bartels. “But in this case, we need the community to make a change with us. Time and again, we hear just how much our Littles are relying on the consistent, safe friendships they enjoy with their Bigs. Home is not always a pleasant place to be for the children we serve, so preserving that support system is crucial right now.”
Trivia Bowl for Kids’ Sake will be held Thursday nights from April 8th through the 29th. Teams of five are registering to compete for cash and prizes, while also raising funds for BBBSLV’s youth mentoring programs. Local companies are invited to sponsor the four-event series, with PPL, Grace Realty, Miers Insurance and New Tripoli Bank confirmed as early adopters.
