September is Hunger Awareness Month, and while many are fortunate enough not to face hunger daily, many of our neighbors are not so fortunate. ¹According to the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley, one in every ten residents in the Lehigh Valley is food insecure. One in six are kids. ²More specifically in the Lehigh Valley, food insecurity affects 10.7% of residents, up from 7.8% before the pandemic. Among children, 15% face food insecurity, compared to 13% prior to COVID-19.
In association of this awareness month, the East Penn and Western Lehigh Chambers of Commerce, proud partners of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce, are honored to present How Can I Help: A Luncheon Conversation on Hunger in East Penn & Western Lehigh on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM in partnership with Cedar Crest College.
“We are not only a Chamber of Commerce but also a Chamber of Communities”, stated Jessica O’Donnell-Gower, Executive Vice President of the Affiliated Chambers. “Our mission each and every day is to help stimulate the economy and to improve our communities, so bringing awareness to the rising rates of those who are facing food access uncertainty aligns with making the Lehigh Valley a better place to live because knowledge is power, and we want to be a part of a solution.”
From a panel conversation with experts on this topic, the aim of this presentation is to shed light on this pressing issue and explore the actionable ways for individuals and organizations to contribute to alleviating food insecurity as well as the bounty of resources available to those facing food insecurity. The panel will feature: Katrina Sundstrom, (Executive Director of Parkland Cares Food Pantry), Nicole Folino (Community Service Manager from Second Harvest Food Bank), and Joy Paulsen, (Representative from Groceries Plus Food Pantry in Emmaus)
Carol Ulrich, Western Lehigh Chair and Vice President of Asset Management for The Goldenberg Group, the management company of Hamilton Crossings, when asked why she wanted to showcase this specific topic she stated, “TGG has a philanthropic arm, People Helping People, where myself and my co-workers volunteer to help those in need throughout the year. Through the years I have seen firsthand how important the topic of Hunger is and I’m always working to find a way to make a difference in our communities. I would love to see more people get involved and understand how many people are affected by Hunger in our communities. Please consider attending How Can I Help Luncheon: A Conversation on Hunger, so you can learn more about this widespread issue and how you can help!”
All are invited to attend this event at Cedar Crest College’s Armory Soisson Center, located in the Tompkins College Center. Registration and networking will begin at 11:30 AM, followed by the program and lunch from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. Lunch is included with each attendee ticket purchased.
