COMMUNITY EVENT AT THE SIGAL MUSEUM
Sunday, June 23, 2024
1:00-3:00 p.m.
EASTON, PA (June 3, 2024) – Join the Sigal Museum for a community partnership program in celebration of Philippines Independence Day! Guests will enjoy live music, a fashion show of traditional and contemporary Filipino fashion, and of course, samples of the shaved ice dessert known as halo-halo.
This program is part of a series highlighting Northampton County Historical and Genealogical Society’s permanent exhibit, Destination: Northampton County, which shares county residents’ stories, photographs, and family heirlooms of the last 75 years. “It is such a joy to host this event,” says Sarah White, Community Engagement Coordinator. “These celebrations are a living example of the vibrance and diversity of our communities, and remind us that the past, present, and future are shaped by our relationships with one another.”
Celebrate our local community by sharing stories and learning about artifacts brought by Filipino immigrants to Northampton County, including a 20th- century ice shaver used to make the traditional dessert halo-halo. Halo-halo is made of shaved iced, topped with coconut milk and sweet toppings such as bananas, jellies, and other fruits. Before the invention of electric ice shavers, tools like these were scraped along large blocks of ice.
Joining us in celebration will be Trixie Oliveira, photographer with Music for a Cause by Art Video Productions; Grazie Pedroso, President of the Filipino American Society of Eastern Pennsylvania, and a fashion show featuring traditional and contemporary Filipino styles.
Schedule:

1:30 PM Members of the Santos family share their family stories, and the donation of the ice shaver and hand-painted dress made in the Philippines, given as a gift from Dr. Meinardo Santos to his wife, Ann.
